5 digital trends to watch for 2009

Steve Rubel, SVP, Director of Insights for Edelman Digital, collates observations from his Digital Insights white papers in the latest post on his Micro Persuasion blog.

Whilst it includes some Corporate-W*nk™ terms such as “Media Reforestation”, but makes some interesting observations:

  • Satisfaction Guaranteed - Customer care and PR are blending as consumers use social media to demand service
  • Media Reforestation - The media is in a constant state of reinvention as it transitions from atoms to bits
  • Less is the New More - Overload takes its toll. Gorging on media is out. Selective ignorance and friends as filters are in
  • Corporate All-Stars - Workers flock to social media to build their personal brands, yet offer employers an effective and credible way to market in the downturn
  • The Power of Pull - Where push once ruled, it’s now equally important to create digital content that people discover through search

IBM developing bullet-dodging bionic armour

File this in the WTF? pile. IBM have been granted a patent for bionic armour that constantly emits an electromagnetic field so it can plot trajectories of oncoming projectiles. If something is determined to be a threat, it fires muscle stimulators to make the wearer contort and dodge the bullet.

IBM's rubbish patent-application diagram is nowhere as cool as you'd hope...

...I'm hoping for something more...

Of course, if it malfunctioned, you could end up with an entire army dancing around like the Thriller video :)

Are you ready for the Semantic Web?

Are you ready for the Semantic Web?
The semantic web ties each data item on the web to other data items of like kind, regardless of their location.
For example, if you’re interested in how to best sell a car, today you will receive thousands of search results. In the semantic web, those data items and documents will be assembled in a single, convenient collection of all relevant references.

I've a keen interest in the Semantic Web as its structure more closely follows the way I think. Given that I seem to spend most of my time explaining what a f*cking HTML email is to people, how the hell are we going to bring people up to speed on this?!

London closed!

We're under more than 6 inches of snow today so in true British fashion the whole country has ground to a halt :) My company has asked that we don't try to come in so I'm writing this post on my phone in bed :)

I've recently bought a 2nd-hand DSLR camera, so that I can learn photography. Went out after work last week to shoot some photos. Check them out on Flickr.com!
